A teen-ager arrested last week in connection with a burglary was also charged with escape after fleeing from the county jail.
Havon D. Patterson, 19, of Mount Vernon Road was initially charged with burglary of a dwelling in connection with a Jan. 21 break-in at Curtis Ford's residence at 611 Martin Luther King. Municipal Court records show that a jersey, jewelry and two department store gift cards were among the items stolen. Patterson also had an outstanding warrant for contempt of court for failure to pay fines of $384.06 and another for resisting arrest on Jan. 26 when an officer tried to serve the contempt warrant.
Eupora Police Chief Gregg Hunter said Sgt. Perry Yates made a traffic stop the night of Feb. 3 during which Patterson, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was arrested on those warrants. Hunter said Patterson was processed at the police station and then taken to the Sheriff's Department.
After being taken inside the county jail for booking, Hunter said a door did not latch completely and Patterson ran out. He was later apprehended on Walnut Avenue in front of Beverly Healthcare nursing home, according to the police chief. Yates, Mathiston Police Chief Roger Miller and city officers Donnie Yates, Shane Box and Keith Crenshaw assisted in his apprehension.
Patterson is being held without bond in the county jail on felony charges of burglary and escape, and misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and contempt of court.
A 17-year-old who was arrested Jan. 27 in connection with the same burglary appeared in Municipal Court on Feb. 3. Court records show that Judge Buchanan Meek Jr. reduced the charge to a misdemeanor on a motion of the city prosecutor. Meek then ruled, because of the youth's age, that the matter becomes one for Youth Court and dismissed the Municipal Court charge without prejudice.
Hunter said all of the items stolen in the burglary have been recovered with the exception of one check.
In other past court action, a teen-ager charged with attempted auto burglary faces grand jury action.
Jarvis L. McComb, 18, had a preliminary hearing in Municipal Court on Jan. 13. Meek found adequate probable cause for him to be bound over to the action of the grand jury and ordered him to appear in Circuit Court on June 21. His bond was set at $5,000.
McComb is accused of attempting to break into a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue parked at the Eupora Pediatric Clinic on Dec. 23; he was arrested that night.
