Emergency responders and other officials learned the basics of incident command Sept. 1-2 at the Eupora Community Center.

Nearly 20 people attended the incident management system training. The course's aim was to help them provide comprehensive, efficient and responsive protection to local citizens under emergency conditions.

Instructors Brad Smith and Glenn Kinnear are delivering the class to all 82 counties as a program of the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. The training is provided in order for the state to remain eligible for federal homeland security funding.

Participants included representatives of Webster County Emergency Management;

Eupora Civil Defense; North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora's Emergency Medical Services; Eupora, Mathiston, Clarkson-Fame and Walthall fire departments; Mississippi Highway Patrol; Eupora and Mathiston police departments; Webster County Sheriff's Department; Eupora public works; Webster and Clay County health departments; Webster County Department of Human Services; Webster County Schools (nurse) and East Webster High School (counselor).

The course is set up to meet obligations of former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove's 2001 executive order establishing the National Interagency Incident Management System as the state's standardized incident command system, to be used during emergency operations.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires the establishment and use of a site-specific incident command system to handle emergency responses. The system ensures that all state and local emergency response agencies and personnel use common terminology, integrated communications, incident action plans, unified command and comprehensive management of resources during emergencies or disasters.
