Eupora police made a felony drug arrest last week in the Churchill community.
Darry D. Morton, 31, of Westwood Apartments was arrested Jan. 8 on a charge of sale of crack cocaine within 1,500 feet of a school.
Police Chief Gregg Hunter said the arrest was made in the area of Griffin Street and Mt. Vernon Road as part of an ongoing investigation, and that more arrests are expected. Morton was being held in the county jail in lieu of a $25,000 bond.
The Municipal Court affidavit filed against Morton alleges that he sold crack cocaine to an undercover officer on Sept. 25 while on Gifford Street within 1,500 feet of Eupora Elementary School. Conviction under the enhanced statute carries twice the normal penalty for selling drugs.
"All officers of the Eupora Police Department participated in this event and are doing a good job with the resources they have," Hunter said.
He pointed out that assistance from the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics in drug investigations has been unavailable because the MBN is stretched thin with so many of its agents now on active military duty.
"We're using the resources that we have," he said.
Hunter asked the public to be patient with the Police Department as it develops new drug informants, whom he noted must be used as long as possible..
