The village of Walthall continues to see improvements in a variety of areas, according to Mayor Belinda Stewart.
Grant funds through the Mississippi Development Authority have been received to expand the wastewater treatment facility, she said. This money will be used to replace the inadequate sand-filter system, add a new lagoon and provide additional wastewater capacity for future growth. In addition, the water tower was painted last year.
Current construction in Walthall includes installation of an elevator and improved accessibility provisions for the Courthouse by the Board of Supervisors.
The Walthall Volunteer Fire Department has significantly upgraded over the past year. The fire equipment has been upgraded with Assistance to Firefighters Grant and matching county funds.
Stewart reported that site improvement continues to occur at the recently completed Walthall Baptist Church.
In another project, bids will be taken this month for rehabilitation of the historic jail building behind the Courthouse to be used as the Village Hall for Walthall. A grant from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History through its Community Heritage Preservation Grant program is funding the majority of this work.
Also, landscaping for the highways 9 and 50 intersection is scheduled for this year.
On the business side, Stewart said Village Cuts and Curls continues to prosper in the former Walthall post office building just across from the south Courthouse entrance.
