WALTHALL - County officials had not heard from Front Line Apparel Group as of Monday regarding a formal contract the company expected to receive to manufacture military uniforms locally.

Front Line officials told the Webster County Board of Supervisors in October that they planned to present the board with verification of a contract from the Defense Department by Monday to produce Army combat uniform trousers.

Board President Larry Crowley told other supervisors Monday he had heard nothing from FLAG since then about the promised contract. Company officials have said they wanted to close a deal to lease the former Red Kap building in Mathiston as soon as possible after receiving the contract.

FLAG officials have been in negotiations with the county for nearly 1-1/2 years to lease the building from the county. The Board of Supervisors has applied for low-interest loans from the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Mississippi Development Authority totaling $750,000 to buy the building.

In a letter to Crowley dated Dec. 16, TVA extended its commitment to approve funding to the county for half that amount; MDA would provide the remainder if that application is approved.

In other business this week, the board voted to:

€ award a $498,534.12 bid to J.J. Ferguson Sand and Gravel for construction of a state-aid bridge and approaches. The bid was the lowest of seven received.

€ hire Robert Willis as county engineer in place of his father, Jack Willis, both with Willis Engineering of Grenada.

€ hire Jimmy Forrester as a part-time dispatcher for the sheriff's office.

€ accept an $1,800 Justice Assistance Grant for the sheriff's office and provide a 10 percent match to purchase a digital camera, four camcorders and two weapons lockboxes.

€ change the name of Pellez Road to Tomnolen-Weir Road.

Supervisors recessed until 8 a.m. Dec. 30.
