Fleming, Hurt win runoffs

WALTHALL - Ken Hurt and Eric Fleming were winners of the June 27 runoffs to choose Democratic congressional nominees

Hurt, a political consultant from Verona, will challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Roger Wicker of Tupelo for his 1st District congressional seat on Nov. 7. Hurt received 67 percent of the votes districtwide to defeat Columbus lawyer William Bambach.

In Webster County, each candidate received 80 votes, according to the official vote election recapitulation prepared by the Democratic Executive Committee.

Statewide, Fleming, a state representative from Clinton. received 65 percent of the vote to defeat Hickory Flat business consultant Bill Bowlin in the Senate runoff. Fleming will face Republican Sen. Trent Lott in the November general election

Bowlin carried Webster County with 134 votes to Fleming's 40.

About 2 percent of Webster County's 7,486 registered voters turned out for the runoffs. Total votes by precinct ranged from one at Grady to 30 at Mantee.

Maben precinct voters cast ballots in the Senate runoff only since it is in the 3rd Congressional District. Eight votes were cast in Maben: six for Bowlin and two for Fleming.
