Gentry pulls off
basketball rarity
For the first time in seven years a Mississippi High School Activities Association basketball teams has finished the season undefeated.
The Lady Rams of Indianola Gentry upset No. 1-ranked Murrah High School 63-58 in the finals of the Grand Slam Tournament in Tupelo on Saturday morning. The win pushed the Class 4A State Champions to 40-0 on the year.
It was the first time an MHSAA boys or girls team has posted an undefeated season since the Lady Panthers of Yazoo City turned the truck during the 1999-2000 season. The loss dropped Murrah, ranked No. 14 in the nation by USA Today, to 37-2 on the year.
Grand Slam will
return in 2008
MHSAA Executive Director Ennis Proctor said the Grand Slam will be played again next year.
The Grand Slam pulls the MHSAA's five classification winners in boys and girls basketball together at one spot to claim an overall champion.
Proctor said Tupelo, the host of this year's Grand Slam, will be in the running to host the even next year, but that no final decision had been made.
The event covered three days, with the Class 2A and 1A winners meeting on Thursday to earn a spot against the 5A champs on Friday. After Friday's semifinals, the title games were played on Saturday morning.
The tourney had four sessions, that brought in a total of 6,220 at the BancorpSouth Arena.
Class 4A boys champ Lanier also won the Grand Slam with a 59-47 victory over Provine. Lanier beat Forest in Friday's semifinal while Provine beat Scott Central. Indianola Gentry, who beat Murrah for the Grand Slam title on Saturday, beat South Pike in the semifinals. Murrah beat Coldwater to reach the title game.
Ole Miss Lady Rebs

The Lady Rebels of Ole Miss taught the University of Maryland a little something about geography and the calendar on Tuesday night.
Lesson No. 1: There is a big difference between the Bahamas and Hartford, Conn.
Lesson No. 2: There is also a big difference between November and March.
That lesson came in the form of an 89-78 for Ole Miss over Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The victory moved the Lady Rebels into the Sweet 16 in Dayton.
Maryland, the defending National Champions, had defeated the Lady Rebels 110-79 in a tournament in the Bahamas on November. But on Tuesday, in Hartford, Ole Miss showed that it was ready to play in March, ,when it counted.
Ole Miss will now take on Oklahoma, a No. 3 seed.Armintie Price scored 29 points to lead Ole Miss against the Lady Terps, while Ashley Awkward hit for 22 and Allicia Easley tossed in 16.
Lady Bulldogs win
WNIT opener
The Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs shook off 17 days of rust to beat Tulane 79-73 at the Humphrey Coliseum on Sunday in the Women's National Invitational Tournament.
The win pushed MSU into a 7 p.m. Wednesday game at Western Kentucky University, which beat Minnesota 73-57 on Monday night.
SEC baseball looks
to be tight once again
After just one weekend of Southeastern Conference baseball only one of the 12 teams in the league is undefeated.
The University of Georgia is on the top of the SEC East with a 3-0 mark after a home sweep of Auburn.
No. 1-ranked Vanderbilt beat Ole Miss 7-6 on Sunday to win the series two games to one. Mississippi State beat Florida 14-13 to win the series 2-to-1.
Arkansas and Alabama were both 2-1 in the SEC West, in a three-way tie with the Bulldogs.
Youth Basketball
League games
The Hoopsters Association thanks all who participated in its Youth Basketball League camp on March 3. The Youth Basketball League will begin games on March 24 at 8:30 a.m.
This league will focus on maintaining good grades and helping the participants in becoming good basketball players. The league will cover basic basketball fundamentals along with emphasizing the importance of being a team player, having a good attitude and showing good sportsmanship. All participants are encouraged to arrive at the gym on time. Parents and friends are asked to come out to support this Youth Basketball League.
