From staff and press reports

The Mississippi Highway Patrol has provided additional information about the June 15 auto accident near Tomnolen that resulted in the death of a local woman.

Maxine B. "Nina" Harpole, 73, of Eupora died of injuries from the crash, which occurred around 5:15 p.m. on U.S. 82 about one-fourth mile east of Allred Road.

Staff Sgt. Tommy Coleman said Harpole, who was alone, was eastbound and had apparently just pulled out onto the highway from her house in a 2004 Ford Taurus.

He said the driver of another eastbound vehicle, whom he did not identify, saw Harpole pulling out and avoided her by crossing to the other lane. Also eastbound behind the second vehicle was a 1999 GMC Silverado pickup driven by Marlena Marie May, 18, of Stewart.

Coleman said Harpole was apparently still trying to get her speed up and May tried to avoid her car but did not have time to stop and struck it. Harpole was taken by ambulance to North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora, where she died from her injuries.

May's brother, 15-year-old Rex May, was a passenger in the pickup and was also taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he was treated for serious but nonlife-threatening injuries, said Coleman. Marlena May went by private vehicle to the hospital and was treated for minor injuries.

Coleman said the accident remains under investigation.

Other Fatal

Accident on 82

The Highway Patrol is also investigating another fatal accident that occurred the afternoon of June 21 on U.S. 82 at Maben-Sturgis Road in Oktibbeha County.

Glenn Bush, 48, of 3519 Kinsey Road in Dothan, Ala., was driving a 2006 International 18-wheeler west on Highway 82 when a 1990 Ford Ranger driven by Darold Neal, 59, of Route 1, Box 145B in Mantee pulled out in front of the truck Bush was driving, Coleman told the Starkville Daily News.

The newspaper reported Saturday that Coleman said Neal tried to cross the highway from Maben-Sturgis Road to reach Highway 763. Neal and passenger Robert Allen "Bob" Hicks, 51, of 167 County Road 166 in Houston were transported to Oktibbeha County Hospital.

Neal was treated and released and Hicks was airlifted to NMMC in Tupelo, where he died from his injuries Friday. Neither Hicks nor Neal were wearing seat belts, but Bush was, Coleman said.
