Measures that the city needs to take in connection with a hotel construction project were among matters discussed at last week's meeting of Eupora aldermen.

Mayor Tommy Lott told them on Aug. 6 that a Scottish Inn with 30-plus rooms is to be built on Highway 9 South and that dirt work has already begun. He said a sewer main manhole at the end of the line there might have to be relocated and that Calvert-Spradling Engineers needs to conduct a related cost analysis.

The mayor requested that the Board of Aldermen approve the transfer of money from the emergency water and sewer fund to pay for the cost analysis. Lott did not know how much the analysis itself would cost but said city workers could construct the new manhole.

No action was taken and Lott agreed to call a special meeting after he received more information about the cost analysis.

In a matter tabled from June 4, Hawkeye Glove attorney Henry Ross and Plant Manager Charles "Dinky" Bowen" appeared before the board to request a 10-year tax exemption on $23,000 worth of new equipment.

After discussion and questions lasting about 15 minutes, the board voted unanimously to grant the exemption. The county Board of Supervisors had previously approved the same tax-exemption request from the company.

At Lott's request, the board voted to submit a non-binding pre-application for an early warning system grant. The grant for two warning sirens requires a 25 percent match.

City Clerk Lesa Hardin reported that Golden Triangle Waste Services has given notification that it will be increasing its monthly garbage collection fee charged the city effective Oct. 1. The board voted to table consideration of a garbage fee increase for city customers.

Aldermen adopted a resolution to commit $5,000 a year from the water and sewer account to maintain Community Development Block Grant sewer system improvements.

The board set a public hearing for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 4 regarding the closeout of a CDBG loan for heating and cooling work a Hawkeye Glove, Aldermen also tabled acceptance of annual material and supply bids.
