WALTHALL - Phillip Smith captured 61 percent of the vote Tuesday to win the Democratic primary runoff for sheriff, according to complete but unofficial results.
Smith received 2,000 votes to Deputy Sheriff Tim Mitchell's 1,291, or 39 percent. Those totals do not include affidavit ballots that were to be counted Wednesday. Three write-in votes were cast in the sheriff's race.
Smith will face Independent candidate Rocco "Rocky" Mumphrey in the November general election. Sheriff Reuben McCluskey did not seek a third term.
Doug Burgess won the Democratic primary runoff for District 5 supervisor with 55 percent of the vote. He was running against Jeff McMinn, who led in the first primary.
Burgess will meet Republican primary winner Charles McClellan in November. Democratic incumbent Casey Weeks did not seek re-election.
Mark Jones will be the new District 1 constable starting in January after winning the Democratic runoff against Howard Rodgers by garnering 55 percent of the vote.
Jones, who also led in the first primary, has no opposition in November and will succeed McMinn, who now serves as constable.
Earl Frost won the Republican primary runoff for District 4 supervisor with 54 percent of the vote against Mike Adams. Frost, who also led in the first primary, meets Democratic incumbent Larry Crowley in November.
Todd Brand of Meridian, as he did in the first primary, carried Webster County in the Democratic runoff for state auditor, with 62 percent of the vote. However, Mike Sumrall, 50, of Olive Branch defeated him in the statewide vote and will face Republican state Sen. Stacey Pickering, 39, in the Nov. 6 general election. Sumrall is a retired county administrator and chief financial officer of Forrest County.
Only 45 percent of the county's 7,564 registered voters went to the polls. Oct. 5 is the last day to register to vote for the general election.
