Mike Narmour, new park and recreation director for the city of Eupora, was guest speaker at the Sept. 18 meeting of the Eupora Rotary Club.
During an overview of city recreation programs, he said the youth soccer program is ongoing and has about 165 children playing, which is an increase of 20-25 from last year.
Narmour said Gary Park, or the James O. Gary Sportsplex, should be ready for play next spring. The park on Hall Road is being developed through a combination of grant and city funds, and contributed labor. He thanked city and county workers and volunteers for their assistance in preparing the fields.
Narmour said Natchez Trace EPA was planning to set seven or eight more light poles there, and that the city plans to apply for a Baseball Tomorrow grant that would go toward the purchase of scoreboards and equipment for the park.
The director said about 215 children signed up for the previous summer ball program and that he hopes to see those numbers increase. He also said a youth basketball program is being planned.
"I think we're making a lot of progress," said Narmour.
