applicator training
Pesticide private applicator training to train private pesticide applicators for certification to use restricted-use pesticides will be Jan. 18 at 9 a.m. at the Webster County Extension Office, 16 E. Fox Ave (Highway 9 North) in Eupora. Please pre-register by calling the Extension Office at 258-3971.
A private applicator is defined by law as one who uses or supervises the use of restricted-use pesticides to produce an agricultural commodity on property owned or rented by themselves or their employer or on the property of another person with whom they trade services.
The charge for this training is $10. Cash, checks or money orders will be accepted the day of the training.
'Supermarket Sweep'
TEAM Mississippi, a partnership for healthy families, is having a "Supermarket Sweep" at SuperValu grocery store in Eupora on Jan. 18 at 4 p.m.
Students and parents from Eupora Elementary will be competing for prizes. Come and watch, support friends, receive tips for healthy shopping and win prizes. Free health screenings and information will also be available.
Bingo at VFW
Bingo will be at 6 p.m. Jan. 19 at VFW Post 3806 in Eupora.
Festival coordinators training workshop
Mississippi's arts and cultural festivals are an important tool in community development. That's why the Mississippi Arts Commission and the Mississippi Development Authority's Division of Tourism Development are working together to present a training workshop for festival coordinators.
The agencies will be hosting the workshop in Starkville on Jan. 22 at the historic Chester Hotel.
The meeting will feature presentations aimed at assisting festival coordinators in their work, including sessions on promotions, increasing volunteers, and developing a crafts component for an event. The session will be led by experienced festival coordinators and entertainment industry professionals who have worked on nationally recognized events, including Memphis in May and The Tennessee Craft Fair.
The event is free for individuals who coordinate Mississippi-based arts or cultural festivals, but reservations are required. The brochure for the workshop (which includes the full agenda and response card) is available online on the Arts Commission's website at: www.arts.state.ms.us.

WCDC meeting
The annual meeting of the Webster County Development Council will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 22 in the Eupora Depot.
The budget for the coming year will be adopted; officers for 2008 will be elected and reports on various activities of the council will be heard.
'Childcare as a Business' workshop
If you own or direct a daycare center, or have always wanted to have a childcare business of your own, "Childcare as a Business," a three-day workshop offered by the Mississippi State University Extension Service, can help you determine if you have the skills and resources needed to develop a childcare business.
The nearest workshop will be Jan. 23-25 in Starkville. The session will be from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and the $25-per-person workshop fee will provide lunch and drinks.
Many childcare centers in the areas are enrolled in a new pilot project, the Mississippi Child Care Quality Step System, and childcare directors must attend these sessions.
Anyone wanting to learn more about owning or operating a childcare business may attend. Pre-registration is required and the class limit is 35 participants. Early registration is encouraged.

'Heart-to-Heart Talk'
Men, women, young, middle-aged or old are invited to join North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora for "A Heart-to-Heart Talk" on Jan. 23 at noon.
The program will be presented via V-Tel Communication System in the NMMC-Eupora Education Conference Room. Presentation speaker will be Sue Robinson, RN, manager, NMMC Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.

Tummy Safe class, exam being offered
Tummy Safe is a food certification course for childcare providers. Tummy Safe offers six contact hours for child care providers who complete the course, and offers certification status for those that take and pass the certification exam.
This course is in compliance with Mississippi law, which requires that at least one person in every licensed day care center be certified in food safety. Tummy Safe was written specifically for the daycare Industry and replaces the previous ServeSafe course for childcare providers only.
Pamela Redwine, nutrition and food safety area agent for the Mississippi State University Extension Service, announces a Tummy Safe certification class and exam for daycare workers being offered on Feb. 5 at the Oktibbeha County Extension Service in Starkville. The class will begin at 9 a.m. and the cost to take the exam is $100, which can be paid by money order or cashiers check. The exam will begin at 3:30 p.m.
If you would rather not attend the class, but still would like to take the exam, you will need to work through the Tummy Safe CD before the exam. The cost of the CD is $25. Space is limited and you must register and pay your fees by Jan. 25 to be considered registered for the class. Registration fees are non-refundable. This course will also be taught at Coffeeville on Feb. 20 - deadline for registration is Feb. 7, and in Houston on April 29 and the deadline for registration for this class is April 17.
'Gospel Explosion'
A "Gospel Explosion" will be Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium at The Wood Institute in Mathiston.
Lee Williams and the Spiritual QCs will perform, along with the Gospel Inspirations, Heavenly Voices and the Gospel Travelers.
