Executive Director Cynthia Wilson of the Webster County Development Council has reported that 2007 was an extremely busy year.

In her director's report distributed at the organization's Jan. 22 meeting, Wilson noted that 2007 saw:

€ Front Line Apparel Group begin operations in Mathiston.

€ Hawkeye Glove in Eupora expand the number of its employees with the procurement of new military contracts.

€ Plymouth Tube complete a $500,000 expansion with the addition of new equipment.

"We had several prospects to look at locating in Webster County in 2007 and anticipate working with some of the Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers coming to the area as a result of the Toyota plant locating in Blue Springs," she stated.

The WCDC is also working with another industry in the county that Wilson said is looking at expanding this year.

Her report also mentioned the feasibility study on the revitalization of the Columbus and Greenville Railway, which was completed last summer. Wilson said officials are moving forward on the project and the steering committee will meet within the next month to begin the process of establishing a regional real authority.

Wilson reported that work has been done to recruit retail to the county. She attended the first Mid-South Dealmakers Conference in Tunica, where she had the opportunity to talk with site selectors for major retailers. She shared with them demographic and trade area demographic information on Eupora and Mathiston plus aerial photos of available property.

Also of interest, Wilson said the March/April edition of Mississippi Magazine will spotlight Eupora. It will also have a home and garden supplement featuring Bruce Walters' pool and yard.

Stephanie Stewart reported a successful Christmas Market last month, which included local vendors almost exclusively.

During new business, District 5 Supervisor Charles McClellan announced James Vickers as his new WCDC Board appointee and District 1 Supervisor Robert Hitt announced Lamar Dumas as his to replace Marvell Spencer.

The membership re-elected the current slate of officers by acclamation: President Mike McCully, Vice President Hank Flowers, Treasurer Belinda Stewart and Secretary Sandra Dewberry, who was also re-elected at-large board member.

Upcoming Events

€ March 25: Recognition Banquet in the Family Life Center at Eupora First Baptist.

€ April 5: Spring Garden Show in Mathiston.
