The city of Eupora will test its severe weather storm siren at noon Wednesday and plans to do so every Wednesday at least through the month of April.

In order to avoid confusion with an actual storm warning, the sirens will not be tested if the weather appears threatening. If one hears the siren on days when threatening weather is imminent, this will not be a drill.

In light of the strong storm system that swept across the state Monday, Mayor Tommy Lott and Steve Wells, city emergency management director, encouraged people to review their family emergency plans.

They said families should make sure they have a flashlight and extra batteries, along with a battery-powered radio to receive severe weather alerts. They also advise all homes to use a weather broadcast receiver to warn of severe weather approaching the Eupora area.

The city officials urged local residents to take shelter in the center of a sturdy building at its lowest point if they hear the siren in the event of an actual storm. They also reminded residents that a shelter is located in the Central Office Building (old Eupora High School building) and that North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora is available for use as a shelter.

Anyone with questions may call the mayor at 258-2291 or Wells at 258-8659.
