A weekend traffic stop in Webster County led authorities to file felony drug charges involving thousands of dollars worth of cocaine against a motorist.

The Webster County Sheriff's Department was conducting a safety checkpoint on Highway 15 in Mantee at the time of Saturday's arrest about 10:30 p.m.

Deputy Tim Allen said the driver of a 2002 Ford Explorer turned around as he approached the checkpoint and officers noticed that the vehicle had no tag. Deputies Bill Denley and Dewyatt Winters followed and stopped the driver, identified as Sorrento Tyrell Randle, 26, of 846 Jefferson Road, Houlka.

He consented to a search of the pickup, said Allen, and the deputies found crack and powder cocaine packaged together in the glove box. The cocaine weighed a total of 4.5 ounces and had a street value of about $13,000.

Randle was charged with possession of crack cocaine with intent to sell and possession of powder cocaine with intent to sell. He posted bonds totaling $20,000 Monday .

Allen said a passenger was in the pickup but Randle stated he had no knowledge of the drugs. The passenger was detained for investigative purposes but no charges were filed and he was released.
