A public hearing for the Webster County School District's proposed 2008-09 budget is set for next week.
The hearing will be at 7 p.m. June 20 in the boardroom of the Career and Technology Center. According to a notice of tax increase being published by the district, the School Board will consider an increase in the ad valorem tax millage rate of 2 mills from 34.4 mills to 36.4 mills to finance 14 percent ($2.05 million) of the proposed budget.
Besides setting the hearing date, the county School Board on May 13 accepted a 16th Section oil and gas bid of $32,008 from Longfellow Energy LP, which was the only bid received.
Minutes of the meeting show the board approved classified staff for 2008-09 at all schools. Also approved were salaries for administrators and supervisors, secretary/maintenance shop pay scales, classified staff salaries and salary supplements/contract days. In a separate motion, the board approved a motion for Superintendent of Education Jimmy Pittman's salary to remain at $82,833 per year.
Pittman recommended that the board approve the creation of a district curriculum coordinator's position, which will require a master's degree and certification in administration. The person hired for this position will be responsible for all curriculum and student assessment for the entire district. The board approved the recommendation.
Board members also approved a recommendation that the district hire two full-time tutors to assist teachers with the Response to Intervention/Tier Intervention process.
