WALTHALL - The Webster County Board of Supervisors handled various matters during its first monthly meeting on Sept. 2.
Eugene Doss, county Emergency Management Agency director and 911 Committee chairman, met with the supervisors. The board voted at his request to appoint his wife, Penny Doss, to the non-salaried/volunteer position of deputy EMA director. Terry McCain, county 911 coordinator, has held that position.
Approved in the same motion was the appointment of Reuben McCluskey, Barry Rushing and Jimmy McLemore to a damage assessment team, also as volunteers with no compensation.
Additionally at Doss' request, the board appointed Eupora Police Chief Gregg Hunter to be a non-voting member on the county 911 Committee. He replaces city Alderman Dan Burchfield, who has resigned from the committee. Doss said Todd Shettles, representing Emergency Medical Services, has also resigned as a committee member but has not recommended a replacement.
The board also adopted a county hazard mitigation plan submitted by Doss.
Upton Sparkman of Sparkman Road met with the board about various concerns of his. These included a used piece of farm equipment directly across from the main entrance of the Courthouse on the east side, which he said should be moved. It is not on county property.
"We don't need that to be in the front door of our county Courthouse," said Sparkman, who said he understood that the county once had an option to buy the property. Presiding Supervisor Charles McClellan told him the village of Walthall had applied for a grant for beautification around the Courthouse, to include the purchase of that property for a parking lot, but that he did not know the status of the grant.
Another concern was a gate that has been erected on Tim South Road, which culminates in a dead end. Sparkman said he did not believe anyone has the authority to block the road off and asked the board to consider opening it up.
Sparkman also said he was concerned about Long Branch Road, which is partially gravel. He said trees and bushes are growing along the shoulder, and that it needs clearing and maintaining.
McClellan told Sparkman he would check into his concerns.
Field Officer Michael Perrigan of the Mississippi Department of Corrections appeared before the board to request permission to move into another office at the County Office Building.
He said a third officer will be joining the MDOC staff there and that a larger office was needed. The board agreed that he could use the office, which is now used only periodically by a constable and the Court Programs officer.
The board voted to allow Justice Court Judges Jerry Jones and Rebecca Ellison to attend conference Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 in Philadelphia. Shane Correro of Willis Engineering met with supervisors to request the signing of various documents.
McClellan presided in the absence of board President Larry Crowley and Vice President Mart Salley, who were unable to attend because of being in the hospital (Crowley as an outpatient in Nashville, Tenn.). The board recessed until 9:30 a.m. Monday.
