Group seeks to overcome obstacles to cancer prevention

Mississippi University for Women's Master of Science in Health Education has been awarded a mini-grant for Webster County.

The "Webster Cancer Roundtable Rally" will hold discussions to talk about past and current initiatives to decide on future course of action in preventing cancer in Webster County. Webster County cancer rates will be compared to surrounding counties.

The Webster Cancer Roundtable Rally will be held to discuss cancer initiatives between key partners and participants.

The organizations and representatives that will participate in this rally are Northeast Mississippi Comprehensive Cancer Coalition; Mississippi University for Women Department of Health and Kinesiology-M.S. in Health Education Program; North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora; American Cancer Society; Baptist Hospital-Golden Triangle (Columbus); city of Eupora, mayor and alderman; Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; NMMC Cancer Center (Tupelo); Webster County Development Council; Webster County Public Library and the Webster County School District.

The Webster Cancer Roundtable Rally will be Sept. 24 and Oct. 29 at NMMC-Eupora in Webster County. The first two meetings will be by invitation only. Future public meetings are planned. The goal of the Webster Roundtable Rally will be to improve the coordination between the involved partners and incorporate the successes of past and current strategies of cancer prevention.

The Webster Cancer Roundtable Rally is funded through East Tennessee State University, in accordance with the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The work of the Webster Cancer Roundtable will add to the work of the Northeast Mississippi Comprehensive Cancer Control. The coalition comprises organizations and individuals who have joined together to improve the lives of Mississippi residents. The coalition's purpose is to decrease cancer incidence and death rates in the state of Mississippi.
