CUMBERLAND - Coming off a Monday night victory, the East Webster Wolverines were ready to play at their home field and send their next opponent home with a loss. However, the Calhoun City Wildcats, led by quarterback J.R. Jennings, had other plans.

It was a close call but East Webster managed to keep its small lead, winning its fifth game of the season, 22-21.

The Wolverines gave a complete team effort and showed consistency in their Friday night win.

East Webster put points on the board early, scoring on its first two possessions, but the Wildcats squeezed a touchdown using a trick play. Jennings received a pass from wide receiver Demarius Howard in the meantime.

In the second quarter, senior quarterback Johnthan Banks made a 10-yard dash to the end zone for the touchdown to put the Wolverines in the lead 14-8.

However, in an effort to put the Wildcats on top, Calhoun City's Jennings connected with Brandon Lawrence for the touchdown in the fourth quarter. After the extra point, the Wildcats were ahead 15-14. Shortly after, East Webster's Reggie O'Briant ran 45 yards, passing Wildcat defenders to the end zone and giving East Webster the lead again.

The Wildcats battled back, as Jennings connected with Lawrence again for the touchdown. With intentions to win, Calhoun City went for the 2-point conversion, but the Wolverines blocked it, helping East Webster win its closest game of the season.

The Wolverines, now 5-0, will travel to Vardaman this Friday night looking to keep their winning streak alive as they battle the Vardaman Rams. Vardaman shut out East Oktibbeha last week, 35-0.
