Mayor Tommy Lott gave the Eupora Rotary Club an update on city happenings at a previous meeting.
Speaking on Sept. 23, he said grant-funded airport improvements have included overlaying the runway, installing a lighting system and fencing the perimeter; timber has also been cleared in the area for safety purposes. The city only paid 2.5 percent of the cost.
Regarding grants, Lott said the city has received a $375,000 grant for sewer and water infrastructure support that will be matched by a bond issue. The city water system serves 4,000-6,000 people and is one of the largest rural systems in the state, said Lott.
Additionally, the lighting of the 82&9 bypass is now complete and the mayor said the utility costs to the city will be $8,000-$10,000 annually.
"We're proud of it," he said. "We think it will help us."
Lott said the city is also proud of the two-story motel being built nearby on Highway 9 South and the RV park that opened earlier this year at Whites Creek Lake.
The mayor said he preaches working together as a team, and referring to teamwork that he said has brought main (Dunn) street back and sales tax increases, he added, "A lot of good things are happening here." Lott, who pointed out that sales tax revenue has increased every year since 2003 and 5 percent over the last year, said, "That speaks volumes to me."
Lott also mentioned the cleanup of the former Allied Electroplating property and additional improvements at Industrial Park II using about $46,000 in remaining grant funds. He said a half-mill increase to support the new budget will bring in about $8,000 that will be earmarked for street overlaying.
