Absentee ballots for the May 5 mayoral primary election in Eupora now are available at City Hall, located at 390 Clark Ave.
In addition to normal business hours - 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays - the city clerk's office will be open Saturday, April 25 from 8 a.m. to noon for absentee voting, and on May 2 from 8 a.m. to noon for absentee voting and voter registration for the June 2 general election.
Voters must be registered by May 2 to participate in the general election. That is also the deadline for voting absentee in the primary election. Absentee ballots mailed to electors must be returned by mail and received by 5 p.m. May 4 to be counted in the primary election.
Two Republican candidates will be on the May 5 primary ballot for mayor: incumbent Tommy Lott and Martha Lou Ballard. The winner will face Jack Haney, now alderman-at-large and running as an independent, and Democrat James "Pop" Woodard in June.
People who vote in the mayoral primary may choose any candidate regardless of party affiliation in the general election, said City Clerk Lesa Hardin. The purpose of the primary is only to choose a Republican candidate for the general election.
In aldermen races in the general election, Ward 2 incumbent Dan Burchfield is running as an independent for the at-large post, as is Democratic candidate Mike Ford and independent Janice Gary. In Ward 1, Alderman Robert Calvin Mays, an independent, will compete against Democrat Vickey D. Patterson.
Billy Brister is unopposed to replace Burchfield in Ward 2 and incumbent Ricky Newton is unopposed in Ward 3. Incumbent Hank Flowers is seeking re-election in Ward 4 against Pete Bailey. All candidates in wards 2, 3 and 4 are running as independents.
Those elected June 2 will be sworn into office July 6 and will serve until 2013.
