Justice Preclears
County Election
In other election news, the U.S. Department of Justice has precleared the special vacancy election set for Nov. 3 in Webster County districts 2 and 4.
The Voting Section of Justice's Civil Rights Division notified county attorney Buchanan Meek Jr. in a June 3 letter that the attorney general does not object to the county conducting the election and, if necessary, a Nov. 17 special runoff election.
The election will be to fill Board of Supervisors vacancies resulting from last year's deaths of Mart Salley, who was District 2 supervisor, and Larry Crowley, who was District 4 supervisor.
Justice Department preclearance is required under the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The candidate qualifying deadline for both races is Sept. 4.
