Coming off a 40-6 victory against Houlka, the East Webster Wolverines were geared up for another win as they rolled into Bruce last Friday night to take on the Trojans.
After starting the season with a couple of heartbreaking loses, the Wolverines have showed their determination for a successful season. East Webster headed to the Trojan field with anticipation, Bruce could possibly be an early playoff opponent, and a mindset to win.
In the first quarter, the Wolverines jump-started the scoring when Demetrius O'Briant made an impressive 70-yard dash to the end zone for the touchdown putting East Webster in the lead 6-0.
However, the harsh weather conditions caused a 30-minute lighting delay sending both teams to the locker rooms.
After the delay, in the second quarter, Bruce answered back when sophomore quarterback Reed Gregory connected 30-yards with Demetrius Evans for the touchdown. Shortly after, in the same quarter Evans connected another touchdown pass this time 22-yards with Ted Esom taking the lead away from the Wolverines, 12-6.
The Wolverines and Trojans locked in a defensive battle on the drenched Bruce field in the second half, as neither team was able to post points in the third quarter.
The Wolverines came back in the fourth quarter looking to pull off the win. Reclaiming the lead for East Webster was Senior Justin Sims who returned a blocked Trojan punt. The Wolverines were ahead 16-12.
Bruce tried to make a comeback, but East Webster's O'Briant capped the Wolverine win in a dramatic fashion after returning interception 99-yards for the touchdown. The Wolverines defeated Bruce 22-12. Bruce now holds a 0-4 record.
East Webster, with a 3-2 record, is hosting the 3A Alcorn Central Bears this Friday night in a Homecoming matchup. Alcorn Central is 2-3 for the season after Mooreville routed the Bears 24-12 last week.
