“From what we’ve been told, this is the most state-of-the art and most updated 911 system in Mississippi,” 911 Director Jimmy McLemore said.
He shared that information at the 911 Center on Dec. 3, when personnel were trained on the operation of the new GPS-upgraded mapping system.
GeoComm had installed the GeoLynx 911 software the day before. GeoComm is a geographic information systems and communications consulting firm headquartered in St. Cloud, Minn.
McLemore said the deployment went off without a hitch and that all tests came back perfectly. The new technology had already been used that morning when a 911 medical call was received from a residence in Mathiston.
When an emergency call comes into the dispatch center the computer screen now displays the phone number of the call, the address of where the call is initiated from, GPS location of that address, directions to the address where the call is from and a picture of the home or business of the calling number.
Callers who are using cell phones can be located to within 5 feet of where they are using their phone. Dispatchers will still ask each caller for their address to verify the information displayed on the screen. If a caller does not, or cannot, say a word, McLemore said the 911 Center will send help to them at their exact location.
Tom Henrich, implementation specialist with GeoComm, said the new system allows 911 operators to give emergency responders turn-by-turn directions to a location or fax that data to their base of operation.
