School budget hearing upcoming

The Webster County School Board will have a public hearing next week on its proposed school district budget for fiscal 2011 next week.

The hearing will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the boardroom of the central office building. According to a notice of the hearing being published in the Progress-Times, the proposed budget has total projected revenue of $16.6 million.

The district proposes to finance 14 percent of that amount, or $2.28 million, through a total ad valorem tax levy. For the next fiscal year, the notice states, the district plans to increase the ad valorem tax millage rate by 2.5 mills from 40.57 to 43.07 mills.

The board set the hearing date during its June 1 meeting. Also on that date, as reported last week, board members accepted Superintendent of Education Jimmy Pittman's recommendation to hire Lundy Brantley of Philadelphia as principal at Eupora High School. He was hired on a 240-day contract beginning July 1.

Additionally, according to the minutes, the board accepted bids from Regions and CB&S as county depositories for fiscal 2011. At the request of Jack Treloar, federal programs director, the board also voted to advertise for bids on a web-based (automated) library management system that will be purchased with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. Bids will be opened July 6.

Consent Agenda

Records show the board approved or accepted these items as part of the consent agenda upon Pittman's recommendation:

• classified staff and substitute bus drivers for 2010-11, and eight summer workers.

• the MAEP salary schedule for 2010-11.

• Joey Tompkins as a member of the certified staff at Eupora High School.

• the resignation of Nina Johnson as Eupora Elementary School cafeteria manager, effective May 31, and the hiring of Leigh McLendon as the new manager.

• permission for out-of-state travel for two of the program instructors and two of the students at the Webster County Career and Technology Center.

They include Automotive Services Technology instructor David Ellison, who will be traveling to Kansas City, Mo., the week of June 21-26 for Skills USA competition. He will accompany Ryan Crowley, who will be competing in the national competition.

Also, Early Childhood Education instructor Janice Gardner will be traveling to Chicago the week of July 3-8 for the national FCLA convention. She will accompany Hope Wright, who will be representing Mississippi as a state officer.

• an out-of-district student transfer request for Conner and Emma Tindall to Calhoun County.
