The Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol is continuing its investigation into a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 82 in which a Eupora man died and five others were injured.
The July 8 accident occurred about 3:30 p.m. at the Highway182 intersection. Edward Erwin "Eddie" Edwards, 95, was killed after the 2000 Buick Century he was driving collided with a 2001 GMC Yukon driven by Armundo Dasilva, 43.
Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Brian Mobley said Edwards was attempting to cross over the westbound lanes of U.S. 82 from Highway 182 when his Buick collided with Dasilva's Yukon, which was westbound on 82.
Edwards, of 90 Sibley Road, was pronounced dead on the scene by Webster County Coroner Steve Wells. Passengers in the Buick were Edwards' wife, Beatrice Trainor "Bea" Edwards, 83, and their stepgreat-granddaughter, Khearsten Bloodworth, 18, also of Eupora.
Both were initially transported to North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora, but Mrs. Edwards was airlifted from the hospital to The MED in Memphis, Tenn., and Bloodworth was taken by ambulance to NMMC in Tupelo for further treatment, Mobley said.
Bloodworth was discharged Monday and Mrs. Edwards was listed in good condition as of Tuesday, according to spokesmen at both hospitals.
Dasilva, of Montgomery, Ala.; his wife, Diana, 48; and their 11-year-old son were also taken by ambulance to NMMC-Eupora, where they were treated and released that night, Mobley said.
All the crash victims were wearing seatbelts, according to Mobley.
Mathiston and Eupora fire departments, the Mathiston Police Department and Webster County Sheriff's Department responded in addition to the local hospital's Ambulance Service and Highway Patrol.
Funeral services for Edwards were Monday with burial in Edwards Springs Cemetery. The World War II Army veteran would have turned 96 today.
